7 Months
We have got one busy little boy on our hands here! I had forgotten how much can happen in a month's time with a baby. Ben is now very mobile, crawling quickly, and just in the last couple of days is starting to pull up on things. We found him kneeling in his crib, hands on rails the other day, so the mattress got lowered tout suite! He is in the process of cutting FOUR teeth. Ouch. Sleep is a desperate situation here, but we are enjoying watching our two little buggaloos grow and play together. Lexi is enjoying preschool, and is very much into playing games and using her imagination these days. Fingers crossed that Spring is just around the corner, as we are tired of the rain and itching to get outside and enjoy our new deck!

Our Little Naturalist
It's amazing to me the sheer number of words Lexi is able to remember these days, usually after hearing them only once. Pappy and Nana will be so proud...

16 Months - A Report Card
With school on the brain, I thought I would provide a copy of Lexi's 16 month "report card:"
Weight - 20 pounds (birth weight 8 pounds)
Height - 77 cm (birth height 52cm)
Head circum - 47 cm (birth head circ 35.5cm)
Teeth - 12
Shoe size - 5
Bed time - 8pm
Wake up time - just after 7am
Nap time - once a day from 12 noon to around 1:30pm
Favorite activities - coloring with (and eating) crayons, reading books (especially about animals), going to the park and picking up sticks and rocks, going for walks in the stroller, terrorizing the "woof woof" at Oma and Grandpa's house, loitering on our balcony, hugging her stuffed animals, watching Big Comfy Couch, causing tidal waves in the bathtub, singing songs and dancing
Favorite foods - peaches, blueberries, bananas, toast, cheese, yogurt, crackers, grapes, oranges, apricots, pears, pancakes, pasta, Oma's cookies
Has a major hate on for - diaper changes, going to bed too early, meat in general, you not doing exactly what she wants when she wants it, strange men, Mommy throwing away her sticks and rocks, getting hands and face washed
Words spoken - Momma, Dadda, down, up, yogurt, bye-bye, hi, night night, juice, that, thank you, two, three (but no "one"), done, nana (banana), uh oh, starting to say milk (just "Mmm" for now)
New tricks - gives high fives, can point to her eyes, nose, ears, hair, mouth and toes, tells you what sound a cat or dog makes, dials random people on Mommy's cell phone, gives kisses (or blows kisses) and hugs, will try to put on own socks and shoes if asked, understands "stop," "no," "sit down," "come here," "are you done?"
Lexi amazes us every day with how much she knows and understands. She continues to make great progress in her fine motor and language skills. We look forward to watching her grow and learn as she sneaks up on the 1.5 year mark. Love you sweet pea!

New Tricks and Such
Only 2 weeks left until summer vacation! I can't wait to be done. My class is a bit of a challenge, and I found it hard to step into a teaching job so late in the year. I'm still uncertain what next year will bring in terms of an assignment because I was laid off yet AGAIN (3rd year and counting), but I have been approved for my 0.2 leave of absence which guarantees me a 4 day a week job next year.
Lexi is walking and talking up a storm these days. As of the first week of June, she weighs in at 19 pounds, 1 ounce, and 73cm tall. She's still in her infant car seat, but we'll be looking at moving her into a convertible (the Britax Marathon) towards the end of the summer. I discovered just this morning that she is cutting tooth #9 on her lower left side. She has been sleeping pretty well since I went back to work and loves spending time with her Oma.
New words include "duce" for juice and "mmmm" when she likes her food (OK, not REALLY a word, but communication none the less). She can point to all the animal and object stencils that decorate her change table area (I'm trying to get this on video) and LOVES going outside. We took her swimming again today and she seems to really enjoy the water. She can get off the couch by herself and for the most part sleeps through the night.
I'm really looking forward to the adventures that this summer will bring. Now that she's down to 1 nap a day, we should be able to get out more and enjoy what Vancouver has to offer. Stay tuned, once I'm off work, I should be able to post more often...

We've got a walker!!!
She finally did it - Lexi took several steps together yesterday for the first time. She did it a couple of different times just after dinner yesterday. Doug tried to capture it with the camera, but she didn't feel like performing for us. We'll keep trying.

Weekend Update
OK, it's not the weekend yet, but I thought I would give a quick update on what's been going on around here lately.
The official tooth count is now 6. Lexi seems to like to cut her teeth in pairs (which probably isn't such a bad thing), and when Daddy isn't around (which in my opinion, IS). She's now got 4 across the top, and the lonely 2 on the bottom.
The official "steps taken on my own" count is now 3-4. Lexi took her first unassisted step on Thursday last week (I know, I'm a bad mommy for not posting it sooner), and took a couple more yesterday after watching her little buddy Hayden show her how it's done. I will try to get her walking on vid and post it.
Lexi is growing like a weed and I'm having to put away some of her 6-12 month and 9 month size clothes. FYI if you have a baby - Old Navy sizes run small and Joe Fresh from Superstore run HUGE. I'd guess she's up to around 18 pounds now, which I think is on the low end of average for her age. She's been eating like it's going out of style lately, so she must be burning off all those calories cruising around the coffee table. She's definitely long in the torso like her Auntie Cat though.
We've been busy with visitors, and will be doing a quick trip to the Island for Easter. Lexi's Uncle John came to visit with his girlfriend Stephanie last weekend, so we had fun going out for dinner and walking around Deer Lake. This weekend we've got some friends visiting from the Island with their kids, who haven't had a chance to meet Lexi yet, and I think we'll be visiting the Aquarium on Saturday.
I'm definitely feeling the countdown is on until I go back to work May 5th. I know Lexi's Oma is excited to start her babysitting duties, and it will certainly make the transition back to work easier on me knowing she is in good hands.
Now if only the sun would shine for a day or two we could get back out in the stroller and get some good old natural Vitamin D!!

New Tricks and such
One of my latest tricks (which I've been doing for at least a few weeks now) is turning on the Xbox. I figured out if you press the round button, it lights up and the disc drive slides out. It's such a fun game to play with Mommy, I turn it on, she says "no" and turns it off. Repeat. Repeat.

Back in Action
Mommy with the stomach flu + baby going through a growth spurt/teething/not sleeping = no new blog posts. Sorry!
Just a quick update on Lexi - she is now pulling up to standing and trying to cruise on the furniture. This girl wastes no time in learning new skills.
My family has all flown into town for Christmas - my grandma, aunt and uncle arrived earlier this week, and my brother flew in from Edmonton yesterday. We'll have lots of new pictures to post soon!

The day we had to lower the crib mattress...
We knew this day would come. Lexi has been rocking back and forth on her hands and knees for over a week now, and this morning she took several paces. Our baby girl can finally crawl. She's smart enough to realize that if she needs speed (like when she wants a sip of Mom's water or to fondle her shiny slippers) she reverts to commando crawl.
We put Lexi down for her afternoon nap today (she's able to pretty much put herself to sleep these days, a big accomplishment). I checked in on her about 10 minutes after putting her down. I found her on her knees hanging off her Rainforest Mobile. Yikes. She was so darn proud of herself. It would have been very cute aside from the fact that she could have really hurt herself. Needless to say Doug and I lowered her crib mattress down before she got her nap. Oh, my back is NOT looking forward to this new development!

Going Commando
(no, it's not what you think!) The commando crawl is Lexi's favorite way to transport herself around these days, although I think crawling is just around the corner. All I have to do these days is dangle either a glass of water or my shiny beaded slippers a few feet away, and she's off to the races!

A Very Merry Half Birthday to you!
There are many cliches I didn't full understand until I became a mother myself.
"Sleep when the baby sleeps"
"Having a child is like having your heart walk around independently from your body"
"Time goes so quickly when they are young"
"They grow so fast"
As Lexi rests in peaceful slumber, I sit and look back over her first 6 months of life with joy, wistfulness and excitement (and I will admit with tears in my eyes). It seems like just yesterday I held my baby girl in my arms for the very first time.
No one tells you that as a brand new mom, you experience a rush of adreneline that allows you to stay awake for basically the first whole week of your child's life. Everything is brand new and exciting, overwhelming, and amazing at the same time. You wonder how something so beautiful and perfect could come from your body and marvel at how your love for someone else could make something so amazing. Again, the cliche of "love at first sight" comes to mind.

Those first few days and week pass in a haze as you learn about this little creature you and your husband have brought into the world. We learn that Lexi likes to be swaddled, will smile early (and for her Oma), likes music and dancing, but hates pacifiers, bottles and sleeping.

Time passes, your visitors go home, your husband goes back to work (much to his great sadness) and it's just you and your lil' one. Days are filled with books, walks, cooing, laughing, tummy raspberries, dirty diapers, spit up, breastfeeding, and piles upon piles of dirty laundry. Sometimes if we are lucky, a nap or 2 happens. Every day is very much the same, but yet vastly different. Some days pass in the blink of an eye. Other days I start watching the clock at 3pm waiting for my dear husband to get home so I can have a break.
Lexi has learned so many things over her first six months. She is already sitting, creeping, eating and gaining weight like a champ, babbling, and cut her first teeth. Doug and I have spent so many sleepless hours worrying about every minor little thing that first time parents worry about - I even dragged poor Lexi to the doctor when she was 5 weeks old, only with her to be diagonsed with a bad case of baby acne. I was sick to my stomach over her first set of shots (less so with her second), her first food, her belly button stump, the shape of her head, her putting things in her mouth that, oh horror of horrors, had touched the floor for 3.2 seconds. And the list goes on. You worry about the timing, consistency and frequency of bowel movements, length (or in our case absence) of her naps, the warmth of her clothes and pjs, the temperature of her bath water. Basically you work yourself up over every possible little thing that could ever go wrong, usually at 4am when you are waiting for her to wake up and feed again for the 3rd time that night. You never imagined that you could worry so much and sleep so little. And you would do it over and over again in a heartbeat. You know with absolute certainty that you would lay down and die if required for your child. It is a frightening power th
at rules your life, yet gives it the greatest meaning.

I read somewhere once that motherhood (and fatherhood I'm sure Doug would agree) is the hardest job you will ever love. I couldn't imagine a truer statement. It's much harder than any 9-5 I've ever held. There are no breaks (well, maybe if your child naps regularly, which mine doesn't), you are on call 24/7, you get peed on, spit up on, pooed on, you give up your body (and boobs) for almost 2 years, and there is no monetary compensation. That being said, I can't every possibly imagine a more rewarding aspiration in one's life than to raise a child. Instead of being paid in money, I'm paid in smiles, giggles (and soon hugs, kisses, and "I love you's") and the ability to watch my girl grow and learn new things every day.
As we round the corner and head towards Lexi's first birthday, there are so many things to look forward to - crawling, talking, maybe even walking, her first Christmas. Stay tuned - I can't wait.

Why we miss Daddy
I've been meaning to add some new posts, but with Doug in China on business I haven't had the time lately. I have a whole new respect for single parents!
Of course Lexi would choose this week to sprout her first TEETH! I noticed them a few days ago - both bottom middle ones have broken through the gumline already. They haven't made much progress since then. She's been handling it like a real trooper.
Some other new things she has done lately:
- turned on her Rainforest mobile BY HERSELF in the middle of the night by pushing the button that starts the music. This put her back to sleep. Oh if she could only do this EVERY NIGHT.
-when I feed her (we've tried yams, applesauce and bananas) she has decided she needs to hold the spoon herself. Yup, stubborn like her daddy!
-figured out if she bashes her rattles or Sophie against the ground/her leg/mommy's face/whatever is close by, it will squeak/rattle
-bitten me for the first time while breastfeeding her (OUCH)
I'll add some new pictures when Doug gets home with the camera.
